We work with many of the surrounding physicians including pediatricians and family practice physicians to help keep the skin of young patients healthy. We evaluate birthmarks on a regular basis for diagnosis and any needed treatment. We treatment chronic and acute skin conditions in newborns, infants, children and teenagers as well as adult patients.

  • Dermatologic Surgery

    Skin Cancer

At Lubbock Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, skin cancer is one of the major focuses of our practice. We specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and prevention of skin cancer and its related disorders. An on-site laboratory facilitates the quick diagnosis and treatment of the most common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs micrographic surgery (described below) is used to remove these two types of skin cancers in appropriate patients. This allows for precise removal of the tumor thus sparing the normal skin. This procedure then allows for smaller scars from the surgery. Many physicians refer us patients for this skin cancer treatment.

Follow-up of skin cancer patients, including melanoma patients, is very important to help identify new or recurrent skin cancers at the very earliest sign. Skin cancers are easier to treat when found early. Also, education of patient for prevention is important to help reduce the number of skin cancers.

    Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs surgery involves the systematic removal and microscopic analysis of thin layers of skin at the tumor site until the last traces of cancerous tissue have been eliminated. The immediate and complete microscopic examination and evaluation of excised tissue is what differentiates Mohs surgery from other cancer removal  procedures. Only cancerous tissue is removed, minimizing both post-operative wound size and the chance of regrowth. Five-year cure rates have been demonstrated up to 99 percent for first-treatment cancers and 95 percent for recurring cancers.

Mohs surgery is most commonly used for basal and squamous cell carcinomas, although it can be recommended for the eradication of some other cancers. High precision makes Mohs surgery ideal for the elimination of cancers in areas such as the face (nose, eyelids, lips, hairline), hands, feet and genitals.

  • Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a term that encompasses a group of chronic skin disorders that affect any part of the body from the scalp to the toenails, but most frequently affect the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet and genitals. Over seven million men and women in the U.S. of all ages have some form of psoriasis, which may be mild, moderate or severe. In addition it may be categorized into different types: plaque, pustular, erythrodermic, guttate or inverse psoriasis. Most forms involve an itching and/or burning sensation, scaling and crusting of the skin.

Psoriasis cannot be cured but it can be treated successfully, sometimes for months or years and occasionally even permanently. Treatment depends on the type, severity and location of psoriasis; the patient's age, medical history and lifestyle; and the effect the disease has on the patient's general mental health. The most common treatments are topical medications, phototherapy, and oral or injectable medication (for severe symptoms).

Lubbock Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center also offers phototherapy (light treatment) for appropriate patients. We have stand-up units and well as a hand/foot unit. The newer injectable biological agents are also used for patients with more severe psoriasis.

  • Acne

Acne is the term for the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can appear typically on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Seventeen million Americans currently have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. While it affects mostly teenagers, and almost all teenagers have some form of acne, adults of any age can have it. Acne is not life-threatening, but it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of lesions, skin type and the patient's age and lifestyle, but on average results are visible in six to eight weeks with medical treatment. Options other than medications include:

    • Extractions
    • Microdermabrasions
    • Laser Treatment (Smoothbeam and V-beam)
    • Blue Light Phototherapy

These procedures are performed routinely for our acne patients in our on-site laser center, Laser Dynamics.

  • Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease affecting about 14 million Americans that causes redness and swelling on the face and also occasionally the scalp, neck, ears, chest, back and/or eyes. Although it can affect anyone, rosacea typically appears in light-skinned, light-haired adults aged 30-50. Symptoms range from red pimples, lines and visible blood vessels to dry or burning skin and a tendency to flush easily, but many people find that the emotional effects of rosacea - i.e. low self-confidence and avoidance of social situations - are more difficult to handle than the physical ones. It is not yet known what causes rosacea and the disease is not curable, although it can be treated in many ways, including topical and oral medications, laser therapy and laser surgery.  Early detection and intervention are essential to achieve the most effective results, or to reduce the severity of symptoms if rosacea has already progressed.

V-beam laser is excellent in improving the redness and removing the visible veins associated with rosacea. We have many patients who were able to reduce or eliminate their medications for rosacea after a few sessions of V-beam laser treatment.

V-beam laser is performed in our on-site laser clinic, Laser Dynamics.

  • BOTOX® / DYSPORT® Neurotoxins

BOTOX® / DYSPORT® are both forms of botulinum toxin type A, is a protein commonly used to non-surgically reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow’s feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. The injections work by blocking nerve impulses, thus weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the skin a rejuvenated look. The procedure is quick and usually performed in an examination room at the time of the initial visit or consult.

  • Fraxel Treatment

Life changes your skin. Fraxel® treatment restores it.

FRAXEL® LASER TREATMENT IS A BREAKTHROUGH AESTHETIC SOLUTION BASED ON A NEW SCIENCE OF FRACTIONAL SKIN REPAIR.

Fraxel Laser Treatment is a new category of anti-aging medicine that provides the positive results of new-generation skin resurfacing without the downtime and risks associated with traditional abrasive treatment methods.

The advanced Fraxel laser treats only a very small fraction of skin at a time without breaking the skins protective outer barrier. This is in contrast to traditional resurfacing techniques that remove the entire top layer of damaged skin and are associated with oozing, crusting and a lengthy recovery period.

This innovative approach repairs damaged skin by leaving each treatment area surrounded by healthy tissue, promoting rapid healing with minimal negative side effects and no lengthy downtime or need for general anesthesia.

  • Juvéderm / Restylane Fillers

When we are young our skin is smooth and elastic with a healthy glow. As we age, our ability to maintain that smoothness and elasticity diminishes, resulting in skin that becomes drier, thinner and less able to replenish itself. Our body’s natural collagen and hyaluronic acid levels decrease and our skin becomes looser. This leads to our skin wrinkling and appearing older than it should.

Approved by the FDA, Juvéderm and Restylane are designed to match your skin, smoothing wrinkles, sculpting lips or shaping facial contours. With the unique ability to bind with water, both products are able to perform for many months in your skin. The most common areas for a treatment are the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth) and marinette lines (puppet lines).  When used for lips or facial contouring, the fillers will add shape and volume to the area. Fillers are able to create volume under your wrinkles, which are then lifted up and smoothed out.

Since no pre-testing is required, a filler treatment can be performed almost immediately. It usually takes about 30 minutes, depending on the type of correction you want.  Most people find the injections relatively painless, but a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area prior to your treatment. You will be able to see the results as soon as your treatment is completed.

  • Laser Hair Removal

Excessive hair growth may arise from puberty, pregnancy, menopause, heredity, medication, diseases or many other causes. Whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, the patient who is tired of temporary, often painful methods of removing  unwanted hair - from depilatories, epilators and shavers to waxing and electrolysis - may welcome laser and intense pulsed light therapy with relief.

Lasers produce highly focused, intense beams of light that are absorbed by dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface and converted to heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two years. Multiple treatments are required for complete hair removal because the follicle must be "active" at the time of treatment and not all follicles are active at the same time.   Treatments are needle-free and anesthesia-free, with most patients feeling nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band.

The most common complication of the procedure is the regrowth of some hair, though it is usually finer and lighter than what was originally removed. Other, rare side effects include redness, swelling, burns and scarring.

Laser hair removal is performed in our on-site laser clinic, Laser Dynamics.

  • Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion reduces the appearance of mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems by firing a gentle stream of tiny particles to exfoliate (abrade) the outer layer of skin and provide a fresh, glowing, younger appearance. The particles scrape away the surface layer of aging or damaged skin, which is then brushed off with the microdermabrasion vacuum tool, with no need for anesthesia. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so damaged areas on sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be treated. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible, although multiple treatments are usually required for full effect. The procedure is particularly helpful for Asian and dark-skinned patients who risk skin discoloration with other treatment options. Microdermabrasion is often performed in conjunction with other skin renewal procedures, such as laser treatment and chemical peels.

Microdermabrasion is performed in our on-site laser clinic, Laser Dynamics.
